At the Heart of the Community

A little bit about Carlisle Matters

About Us

Carlisle and District Federation of Community Organisations (Carlisle Matters) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charities Commission under registration number 1166941, which exists to support its member organisations within both the City of Carlisle and the wider Carlisle District (the Area of Benefit). Despite its relatively recent formal registration (2016) Carlisle and District Federation of Community Organisations has worked diligently to benefit the wider Carlisle community since the early 1970s!

Member organisations are currently, for the most part, Community Centres embedded deep within the heart of the communities they serve. As expected, given the large geographical area covered by the Carlisle District, the communities that each member organisation serves differ significantly in terms of local needs and deprivation. As such, Carlisle Matters’ primary purpose is to support these organisations to ensure that work is carried out in the most efficient way to give the maximum benefit for local inhabitants, within constraints of the limited funding available within the sector.

At the time of writing, there are 11 Community Centres, and one Community Organisation registered as members of Carlisle Matters.

In 2019, Carlisle Matters successfully obtained three years of grant funding from The National Lottery Reaching Communities fund for their “Carlisle Communities Together” project. This funding enabled the provision of a “Community Centre Development Manager”, which, alongside the Trustees, will help further Carlisle Matters’ objectives in promoting cohesive working amongst Community Centres and Organisations within the Carlisle area alongside expanding the membership of the organisation.

Running in parallel with the Lottery funding, Carlisle Matters has also been integral in supporting the various communities within the Carlisle District with issues surrounding children’s holiday activities, youth provision, food security, social isolation, and many other pertinent problems.

Carlisle Matters is led by a volunteer Trustee Board and is, for the most part, composed of Trustees and Managers involved in the running of Community Organisations within the Area of Benefit, bringing a wealth of skills and experience to the organisation.
